kunstverein in bremen /
city of bremen

competition 2005

wilfried hackenbroich and rainer mühr with: daniel müntz

The Kunsthalle Bremen is situated in the Park of the former city fortification. It was built in 1849 and extended in 1982. It accommodates the selection of the Kunstverein which includes works from Dürer to Paik. The task for the competition was to extend the Kunsthalle with exhibition spaces, storage, administration and a cafe.

We decided instead of replacing the former extension to integrate it in the new extension which saves building costs and made it possible to keep the Kunsthalle open during the construction time. The new extension was designed as a continuation of the historic building in a contemporary way. The sandstone of the building was used to form perforated elements which create a texture with a closed appearance from the outside and a filtered light situation inside. Large scale openings fort he non-exhibition spaces provide a visual connection to the surrounding park.
