Our special interest in medias is the networking . Formulated in Metcalfe´s Law, adding one device to a network, the value of the network increases exponentially. Transferring this idea into urban or spatial networks it becomes clear where the value of information and communication technology lies.
For the
SHOES Concept Store we have extended the shop by the telepresence of other stores and generated 24-hour-activities in each shop. For the Nokia Lounge the networking and creation of a lounge network was an essential part of “connecting people”. This visualizes and explains the otherwise rather abstract field of activities and products of Nokia as a global player in information and communication technologies .

An important aspect of electronic networks is
adaptability . Individual life-concepts and permanent changes in our society demand more flexibility. This flexibility shows itself in time management and activity patterns but also questions the spaces where we live, work, relax or learn. continuity, is opposite to this demand. We need spaces “on demand”, now and easy, instantly but not for long-terms.

Architecture can serve this desire, but
new typologies have to be developed. As an example: a garden can be rent for days instead of

buying one and having a long-term commitment. For this study at the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, Serve City – Interactive Urbanism we have developed six of these alternative typologies as parts of a new suburban networked service quarter in Sydney.
Our goal was to organize the living and working spaces which are subject to permanent growing and shrinking, inside an urban structure. The electronic medias are used here in two different ways.

First the design of the private buildings and the location on site are
organized on a website, enabling “co-design” between planners and users in the development of this suburban quarter..
Second trough new information and communication channels an urban network develops with a high degree in
“freedom of choice”, where the user at anytime filters and selects which information she/he wants to send or receive, how much she/he is in contact with the community. The user can look for a tennis partner or block the information of the virtual flea market.
