Univercities” - CIAM Urbanism II, Bauhaus Kolleg XI

The
new Bauhaus Kolleg XI will start at October 12th 2009 (Application deadline: 31 August 2009)

In its programme for 2009/2010, the Bauhaus Kolleg XI will focus on the urban education infrastructures of post-war modernism. Against the backdrop of the Cold War, the emergence of the modern welfare state, the rise of the consumer society and growing mobility all improved access to education. The shift in social realities after WWII also forced a revision of the role and tenor of the state’s educational institutions. In many parts of the world, the competition for participation in the cities’ resources of education and knowledge centred on universities and schools. The foundation of new university campuses at that time gave voice to the thirst for education, and the spirit of reformation. The campus was built in a rural environment outside the city limits, to allow access to knowledge and education in concentrated form in quasi-monastic solitude, undisturbed by the city’s diversions. At the same time, educational reform movements tailored to local needs originated in the cities, and these sought to redefine relations between local area, school and city.

The Bauhaus Kolleg "Border Cities" is developed, organized and conducted by Regina Bittner, Wilfried Hackenbroich and Steffan Rettich at the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation.

“Cities of Tomorrow” - CIAM Urbanism, Bauhaus Kolleg X

The new Bauhaus Kolleg X will start at October 13th 2008 (Application deadline: 30 September 2008).

With its program
“Cities of Tomorrow” - CIAM Urbanism - 2008/2009, the Bauhaus Kolleg X seeks to reassess the international planning and urban design strategies of the 50s and 60s from a contemporary perspective. This inter-disciplinary program aims to update the planning and design strategies of the international urban Modernism in the 50s and 60s. The focus is a period in which the utopian ideas of the “Modern movement” were internationally spread and realized and influenced by a variety of local transformational dynamics. Are the core problems of international post-war modernism such as housing shortage, the population explosion, and the increasing polarisation of social groups within today’s cities still prevailing? Can a review of the Modern heritage – the yesterday’s “cities of tomorrow” – provide strategic solutions for today’s global problems?

The Bauhaus Kolleg  is developed, organized and conducted by Regina Bittner, Wilfried Hackenbroich and Steffan Rettich at the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation.

Our interior design for the hairdresser shop “Haarwerk opens its doors. For this shop we developed and realised an interior concept including furniture and light design.

The light installation has become a main spatial feature. Seventy-five lamps emerge from a central point of the space and reach out into the room. A cloud of lights expands through the store. With the visible wires they form a spatial texture like a distorted chandelier. The lights can be controlled and dimmed in five circles to allow a smooth transition of various illuminated conditions.

The over all organization of the store was challenged by the spatial limitation of the old factory building. To maintain a coherent spatial experience while accommodating all functional areas, we decided to “extrude” the enclosed functional areas from the back-wall. The surface of the wall “remained” on the volumes/furniture while the other surfaces “merged” with the floor. Through this manipulation we gained an articulation of the volumes in one direction and a camouflage of the volumes in elevation resulting in a simple appearance from the outside.

The materials fluctuate between a refined and rough appearance. While the wallpaper has a subtle elegance the lamps have an industrial quality. The colors articulate the volumetric logic by continuing the dark gray of the floor or the ginger marking the sidewalls of the store. The lights, when partially dimmed, combine the white of the wallpaper, the ginger of the wall and the dark grey of the floor.

Month of Design
was born from the desire to closely connect professional designers and industry.  Since creating brands and acquiring professional know-how are inextricably linked to the design process, they have become the cornerstones of the annual design conference, suitably entitled this year Brands and Brains.

The lecture of Wilfried Hackenbroich has explored the relationship of identity and design by looking at principles and mechanisms in the design process and exploring the strategies of Hackenbroich Architekten and how they have employeed identity in the design process.

Lecture: Identities and design – spaces of meaning

If design and identity is brought in relation, design objects and spaces have the potential to become icons of identity. Icons are originally religious artefacts or representations, which condensate a larger “thing” into a physical form. They are objects presenting the un-presentable. They are not the content but the representation of it; icons are objects of meaning.

The issue of iconography through identities and design will be explored by three architectural projects which raise the issues of public design - contextual space; corporate design - brand space; as well as individual design - personal space.

The new academic year 2007/2008 of the post gradual program of the Bauhaus Dessau, the Bauhaus Kolleg, starts: Bauhaus Kolleg IX: EU Urbanism 2 - Border cities on the Baltic Sea . It focuses on border cities in the Baltic Sea region as places where a new Europe is being formed. The Baltic Sea region is one of the “laboratories” where the negotiations for a new Europe have been at their most dynamic since the end of the Cold War. It is one of the most multifaceted and contradictory regions, characterised by inequalities, discontinuities and conflicts, but also by intensive exchange, cross-border cooperation and migration.

The Kolleg will base its examination of these issues on three border cities in the Baltic Sea region: the Oeresund Region with Copenhagen, Denmark and Malmö, Sweden the Twin Cities of Tallinn, Estonia and Helsinki, Finland and the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad. In these cases the Bauhaus Kolleg will explore the actuality of borders in different ways.

The
Bauhaus Kolleg "Border Cities" is developed, organized and conducted by Regina Bittner, Wilfried Hackenbroich and Steffan Rettich at the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation 2007/2008.

Our trade fair stand for uboot.com (social network platform) will be shown at the Online Marketing Düsseldorf 2007 (stand No. 10 in hall 10).

The trade fair stand for uboot.com is shaped by one soft volume. This complex volume is realised with simple means and differentiates the space according to the needed functions and desired atmospheres. It is formed by white textile ribbons of different lengths. The ribbons distribute the light from above and together with the continuous movement they give a special atmosphere to the stand. The volume differentiates the space underneath towards more open and more closed areas of different sizes and atmospheres. At the same time the volume opens the stand to the surrounding at strategic positions: at some places visitors are invited to enter the stand while at other places they have only visual access. In combination with the furniture various blurred zones of information, communication and work are established. Besides the open spaces also an enclosed space is created by the ribbons to provide a private service area.

Functionally the ribbons work very effective: Open to the sprinkler system of the fair, a visible border but easy to pass through. They shape the atmosphere as well as the programming of this trade fair stand for uboot.com.

The Traffic of Clouds Berlin /  Germany

:: 13th of September 2007 :: Berlin, Germany ::

At the 13th of September our architectural installation “The Traffic of Clouds” in cooperation with the Norwegian artist Jan Christensen will open its doors at the PROGRAM gallery in Berlin.

Developed over the course of eight months between the artist and us, this project is ultimately an experiment in collaborative thinking across disciplinary and methodological borders. A logic of weaving and constant movement pervades both the built form and the wall painting. The tension in the wood fibers of the interwoven boards forms sturdy walls of lace, redefining both the visual effect and the intended use of the wood boards. As if casting the negative space between the structure onto the gallery wall, Jan Christensen’s painting deepens the space of the room – blending color into changing views afforded by the installation.

The
Traffic of Clouds aims to question the standardized ways we use our everyday spaces and to present an alternative where a space’s function is not prescribed by convention but determined by its users. Spreading between rooms and reaching towards the ceiling, the new surfaces disrupt and reconfigure the planning of PROGRAM’s functions: the installation will dissolve the boundaries between exhibition space and office, hybridizing the formerly separated gallery and office functions. Filling up the entire room, the structure’s role will also be blurred – at once an installation object, a walking surface, and a room. Folding upon itself in waves of wood, the structure’s fluid form accommodates various activities simultaneously. Like an outdoor park, the construction provides for its users a place for leisurely diversions; continuing to blur categories of indoor/outdoor uses and sponsoring an indoor urbanism of sorts. Indeed, those who work in PROGRAM’s office space are invited to use the structure as an office throughout the duration of the exhibition.

Jan Christensen’s paintings work similarly to bridge these categories. Having a formal origin in street-art and graffiti, Christensen recaptures the spirit in this practice of ‘urban wall painting’ by trespassing the formal boundaries of the gallery’s wall. As if in conversation with the movement of the boards, multi-hued patterns span indiscriminately across walls, ceiling and column.

Wi-Fi use will also be available for visitors during the exhibition hours.

We won the 1st prize of the unbuilt shirt award 2007
held by unbuilt shirt and competitionline. We participated because we wanted to transform this architectural concept into an urban / fashion environment.

Our entry uses our design-scheme for the Nam June Paik Museum and transforms the idea towards something new. The field of monitors embedded into the ground (media surface) becomes an urban network of t-shirts (– users). Every shirt shows the whole network on the front side, while on the back side one unique node (=monitor) is shown. In this way every single shirt becomes unique and part of a relational space of an imaginary and mobile network.

Archis VOLUME #11
(Archis 1/2007) features an article about Archis Interventions in Prishtina.

The Mission
Prishtina is an example for a city in transition facing an enormous challenge: from socialist era to the market driven economy, and to reinvent itself again after a long period of oppression and conflict. It shows the difficulties of the transformation process, which can be identified in cities all over the Balkan, but also in other parts of the world. Most of the time there is a complete lack of public bodies with the capacity and jurisdiction to enforce law. And always there is a profound crisis of confidence in the public dimension of urban life. At this point Archis Interventions is intervening working out concepts in cooperation between international and local experts, bringing important themes of the future urban development into public awareness, and mediate between local authorities and the private interests. The local NGO will be supported by Archis Interventions bringing international expertise and organizing the information exchange to develop a sustainable solution strategy.1 The problems related to the regulation of informal building activities in post conflict situations as the future aspects of architecture and town planning in this context regarding the specific social as political circumstances will be theoretically discussed and brought into the international urbanistic debate.

Archis Interventions
Run as a non-profit branch of the Archis Foundation, Archis Interventions has set itself on a course to provide cities with clues and concepts to revive the public domain, to reenergize its urban spirit and to revitalize their trust in dialogue as the essence of civic life.

Archis VOLUME #11 (Archis 1/2007) features the article “Planning for Uncertain Cities - Towards an Urban Post-Conflict Strategy” written by Wilfried Hackenbroich, Thilo Fuchs and Kai Vöckler.

Cities in the post-conflict rebuilding phase have recurrent, comparable problems. Political power vacuums at the national level and absent civil self-monitoring generate uncontrolled forces which seriously damage the cities’ chances for recovery. For this reason it is necessary to scrutinize the aid and planning strategies we have used and intensify the search for possible alternatives. We delineate here a few essential aspects of this problem.

The documentation of the workshop “International City Mostar” held by the Bauhaus Kolleg VII “UN Urbanism” and the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in Mostar in 2006 is released. Organised and held by Regina Bittner, Wilfried Hackenbroich and Kai Voeckler the workshop examined the potentials for the future development of the divided city.

The International Bauhaus Kolleg »UN-Urbanism« focused 2005/2006 on the transformation of cities in so-called crisis regions. The role of the United Nations in the management of local conflicts has grown significantly in recent years. The UN not only makes an important contribution to the regulation of disputes, but also to the restitution of political, social and cultural institutions. In doing so, often in collaboration with international aid organisations, urban structures are developed, which, while at first temporary, have a major influence on the further development of these locations. Globally active organisations thereby initiate urban transformations in diverse regions of the world, which apparently follow the same pattern. Based on the examples of Mostar in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Kabul in Afghanistan, architects, planners, artist and academics examined the effects of crisis-regulating urbanisation, which will be soon documented in a publication of the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation

The realization of the Sitscape , developed for M. Grzymislawska, is finished. The Sitscape is a customized lounge. The design is based on specific seating positions and smooth transformations between them. The six preferred relaxing positions of the client form a perfect fit and provide familiar possibilities for relaxing. The transitional areas between these positions are undetermined in their use; they provide new and unexpected possibilities, which have to be discovered by the clients.

The “Sitscape” is a
„customized mass product” that can fulfill different demands and forms with the same structural principle. The main structural elements are the sections, which are digitally cut out of laminated wood. The connecting structure is a steel and aluminum construction, which is minimally visible. The upholstery consists of individual elements that will be placed by the clients needs.

Archis Interventions
held a Workshop in Prishtina entitled “Prishtina Unbuilt”.

After the war, the Informal building activities seriously affected the city structure of Prishtina and raised social, infrastructural, and safety problems. More than 70% of the urban fabric has been transformed, demonstrating how law enforcement may completely lack or pushed for review from one desk to another. Consequently, necessary standards in the building process are not yet put in place and there is little public awareness about fundamental problems emerging out of Informal settlement. The project will develop solution strategies to facilitate the private developers in meeting the provisions of laws and Regulations in regard to the needs of the community development. To do so, Archis Interventions / Prishtina, as a local, non-profit and independent NGO, will bring professional expertise into this process.

Wilfried Hackenbroich holds the workshop “Living Fashion – Inside/Out” within the seminar “Extremes Wohnen in der Stadt” (extreme living in the city) at the Institute for Urban Planning at the TU Graz.

Living in the city gets a new popularity. Besides jobless, poor and old people more and more young employees and families see urban living as a real alternative to suburban living.

This workshop examines a possible differentiation of living models by atmospheres. Associated mechanisms and characteristics of new fashion trends form the basis of the design studio.  With the help of an extended program created for the different fashion trends, the organisational principle for the apartment is developed. Furthermore we studied how specific qualities of suburban exterior spaces could be transferred towards urban living typologies.
